Job Description:
Performs relay protection and control engineering, including
preparing detailed designs for high-voltage substation and transmission
projects through 500kV. Prepares, provides guidance, or assists in
preparing and developing engineering deliverables for electric substation
projects, including development of single line & three line diagrams, AC &
DC schematics and wiring diagrams, relay settings and calculations,
control and relaying panel layouts and specifications, control and
relaying panel and equipment wiring diagrams, SCADA and communications
interfaces including RTUs, HMIs, and IEDs, auxiliary system design
including batteries and chargers, AC & DC load centers, conduit and cable sizing,
backup generator sizing (UPS), commissioning and functional testing specifications, and Bill of Materials. Works closely with other
engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design package
and requirements. Develops technical specifications, develops
project design basis documents, provides direction and guidance to drafters and
designers, and directs the flow of drafting and designer duties (including
regularly providing project status updates to the Project Engineer &
Project Manager). Monitors multiple projects and provides detailed
design packages that comply with applicable engineering design standards and all
safety codes. Performs quality review checks on assigned projects is
also required as well as following client requirements and internal company
quality control and quality assurance practices. Works closely with
other engineering and project management team members to coordinate
overall project deliverables and helps to maintain project budgets and
schedules. Serves as lead engineer or technical reviewer on assigned
projects for accuracy and completeness. Provides technical guidance and
coordination regarding solutions to support the client System Protection,
Automation and Telecommunication departments. Serves as the interface (or takes
a lead role in resolving problems, procedures, and methods) working
with clients, other company departments, outside consultants, contractors,
suppliers, and manufacturers on technically related matters, including the
development of protection construction sequence plans, temporary protection
schemes & mobile interface plans to serve as the platform for assisting
the utility client stakeholders in various disciplines in development of the
Project Outage Planning. Identifies risks to the project with knowledge
of the utility operating system and supplemental protection schemes to
mitigate risks during project commissioning. Education & Experience Requirements: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
(willing to accept foreign education equivalent) plus 3 years of experience
performing protection and control engineering or, alternatively, a
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience as noted above. Specific skills/other requirements – must possess the following:
1 year of experience leveraging protective relaying principles and
protection design to develop complex protection conceptual designs and
alternatives for client presentation; 2 years of experience leveraging utility
operating systems and practices, utility protection and design standards,
and performing short circuit and coordination calculations; and, 1
year of experience designing relay and metering single line, and one and
three-line elementary diagrams, AC and DC schematics, wiring and
interconnect drawings for electrical protection systems, including relay
communications, as well as interpreting and applying the latest and legacy utility
